Munford High School Band has been offered the opportunity to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1, 2019, in Pasadena, California.

Although the big parade is still months away, the band is bearing the Mid-South heat to practice.

Band member practice almost everyday. The Tipton County high school is one of five marching bands nationally invited to perform.

The Munford band has marched and played in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and generally wins band competitions in this region of the United States.

During rehearsals the band takes plenty of breaks and keeps gallons of fluid on hand to stay hydrated.

"It just shows how dedicated we are and how special it is to us," band member Jonathan Ervin said.

"My students are absolutely my heroes. They are the hardest working young adults I have ever seen anywhere and in my life," said Barry Trobaugh, who's in his 25th year as band director.

About 265 band members will travel to California for the eight to nine day experience. According to the Trobaugh, the cost is estimated well over $600,000.

"These kids work hard. We are sure, we are positive that they are all going to represent us very well," Trobaugh said.

"It's not always about winning. We're one big happy family, and I feel that's the biggest part about this band is that even if we do lose or win, we still have that family connection," band member Arionna Nataniel said.

As an added bonus to the band's sweat and sacrifice, the president of the Tournament of Roses Parade is coming to the Mid-South to watch them perform later this month.

Students credit their success to a supportive director, their parents, and booster club members.

"The school is really supportive of the band always whenever we need anything, and that is something really special about this place in general," Ervin said.
